New Atheist Symbol

Apparently, Members of Atheist Alliance International are considering a new symbol.

A for Atheism

The last time I checked, this symbol meant ‘at’ as in dylanschrader@gmail.com rather than ‘atheist.’ I hope the fact that it’s capitalized won’t introduce confusion when giving out email addresses: “Is that a capital ‘at’ or a lowercase ‘at’?” We already have some people making the distinction between “upper caps” and “lower caps.”

It also look like a mirror image of Chris Angel’s (Mindfreak) logo and the old star trek badge.

Atheist Alliance International has done no such thing.

Attendees at the recent AAI convention participated in unofficial balloting. The symbol you depicted was the favorite, but it belongs to no group.

Anyone can wear it if they want.

or at EvolveFish

PS: I think if you compare the symbol with @ on your keyboard, you will see quite a difference, aside from upper vs. lower case.

One more thing: I suggest you correct your spelling.

You have written “New athiest symbol”

I was on the AAI Symbol Committee that came up with the finalists. The symbol did remind me of the old Star Trek badge. However, I liked that, since the series was created by secular humanist Gene Roddenbury and it shows that advanced civilizations lack religion.

AAI convention attendees voted this as the atheist symbol they liked the best among the nominated symbols. Use of the symbol is entirely voluntary. It may or may not catch on. We shall see.

One could argue that the Christian cross symbol resembles the mathematics “plus” (+) symbol even more than this atheist symbol resembles the e-mail “at” (@) symbol.

Thanks for the correction! Of course, I could have been using the superlative form of the adjective ‘athy.’ In fact, I think this symbol is much athier than other symbols.

If I recall, the plus sign (+) is a medieval abbreviation for the Latin ‘et’, meaning ‘and.’

I guess if somebody used + and @ in the same phrase, he could really confuse people. Maybe ‘?’ could mean ‘agnostic.’

There was a Star Trek episode that addressed religion. In it, they visited a planet with Greek gods and architecture. One of the gods wanted Captain Kirk and his crew to pay him homage. Captain Kirk resisted by explaining that his people worshiped one God. Just because religion is not a central focus in the series does not mean that advanced civilizations abandoned it.

I said this when I saw you writing your comment and I’ll say it again:

Mom, you watched Star Trek? Wow!
